Briony Hoare - Winemaker Profile

For Briony Hoare, a weekend visit to the vineyards of the Barossa Valley at the age of 15 set her on the path to her chosen career as a winemaker. After completing a Bachelor in Agricultural Science, majoring in Oenology, at the University of Adelaide, Briony entered the Southcorp Graduate Winemaker programme. This gave her two years of experience across Australia's major grape-growing regions including Victoria, Coonawarra and the Barossa Valley.

Following her graduate training, Briony returned to make wine at Lindemans Karadoc winery in Mildura and then Tulloch Wines in the Hunter Valley before finding her home at Rosemount Estate, McLaren Vale in 2001.

Briony was named Young Winemaker of the Year 2003 by the Wine Society. She won this prestigious award for two wines she made at the Rosemount McLaren Vale winery – the 2001 Rosemount Estate GSM Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre and the 2002 Rosemount Estate Diamond Label Shiraz.

As well as establishing herself as a competent Australian winemaker, Briony has also found the time to pursue her love of Italian wines. In 2000 she completed a vintage in Italy’s Piedmont region - producing Italian favourites such as nebbiolo and barbera. Briony believes that finding a balance of flavour and texture are an integral part of winemaking. This interest in texture and flavour continues outside of her winemaking, fuelling her passion for cooking.

Based at Rosemount Estate McLaren Vale, Briony is part of a winemaking team of four that produces wines from the Diamond Label range through to wines such as Balmoral Syrah, Traditional, Show Reserve Shiraz and GSM.
