Talk to Rosemount Estate winemaker, Andrew Koerner, about the 2003 vintage in Orange and his pride and excitement are plain to see. "The red wines are the best I have ever seen from Orange and will provide the outstanding wines of the vintage for Rosemount Estate - and you can quote me on that," said Andrew. "Orange has always created refined wines with seductive fruit flavours, however the 2003 vintage added concentration and structure to the mix, defining the potential of this region." The deep, fertile, volcanic, loam soils of Orange maintained moisture throughout the drought but yields were reduced by the cool temperatures experienced during flowering. The low yields and moderate temperatures proved an excellent combination for quality. The February rains were minimal in Orange and helped to invigorate the canopy after the dry conditions. The Orange vineyards at higher altitudes continued to perform strongly and will provide the core of the eagerly anticipated Rosemount Estate Orange Vineyard trio of red wines. Excitingly, the lower altitude Orange vineyards, now six years old, are starting to fulfil their potential and the quality of this year’s harvest was a significant improvement on 2002. Shiraz from Orange displays rich fruit, black pepper and precise structure whilst the cabernet sauvignon is complex and layered with intensity, structure and persistence of flavour. The 2003 Rosemount Estate Orange Vineyard Merlot will provide an exciting glimpse of this variety’s potential with lifted violet aromatics and intense berry and plum flavours. top2002 VintageWinter and spring rains maintained soil moistures at high levels in Orange, encouraging very vigorous growth. The main challenge was to contain the canopies and crop levels in some vineyards. Most vineyards handled the hot January well, but scattered rain during the harvest making picking challenging. The Rosemount Orange Vineyard Chardonnay will be of very high quality with elegant flavours, fine acidity and great length. Amongst the reds, Merlot was excellent and there are some good parcels of peppery Shiraz, so the Orange Vineyard Merlot and Shiraz will be worth waiting for. top2001 VintageWinter and spring rains maintained soil moistures at high levels in Orange, encouraging very vigorous growth. Careful canopy management and selective bunch thinning promoted better physiological ripeness leading up to the crucial weeks before harvest. The fruit was harvested under fine conditions in late March with a smaller than average yield showing pronounced cool-climate characters. top1998 VintageThe 1998 season in Orange was slightly warmer than average, with greatly reduced rainfall levels throughout the Spring and Summer months leading to uneven fruit set and lower yields. A warm and dry autumn fully ripened the fruit before vintage was conducted amongst fine conditions in March. Ultimately, a varietally expressive crop with great depth of flavour was harvested and then transported to Rosemount's Denman winery for vinification and maturation. top1997 VintageThe 1997 season began with an early cool spring resulting in slower than average vine development and slightly uneven fruit set. The onset of summer and improved warmth in the soil allowed rapid progression in ripeness and fruit flavour before ideal autumn conditions fully ripened the crop. Hand picked during the last two weeks of April, the fruit came into our Denman winery showing fine depth of colour, varietal flavour and full tannin ripeness. top1996 VintageThe 1996 Season in Orange was typified by a cool, even spring followed by overcast mainly dry weather through the summer. A cool but sunny autumn enabled fruit to ripen gently, yielding a crop with concentrated yet balanced fruit characters. Ultimately the crop was picked at ideal ripeness in late April and then transported to Rosemount's Denman winery for vinification and maturation. top1995 VintageThe 1995 vintage started with good growing conditions throughout winter and spring. Budburst and vine growth were even and vigorous. Cool but dry weather conditions in January slightly delayed vintage and resulted in fruit with elegant flavours and well defined cool climate characteristics. The fruit was hand picked in late April and then transported to Rosemount's Denman winery for vinification and maturation. top1994 VintageSorry, there is no vintage guide available for this year. top1993 VintageSorry, there is no vintage guide available for this year. top |
